Shooting on the street is tough b/c you never know what you are going to find, lighting conditions etc.

No , I mean get closer to the subject (for the full lenght portraits, at least) and try shooting with normal 50mm lens , and crop if/as needed.
This will give a more documentary feel. Just a thought.
I think early Bruce Weber used normal lens on Pentax 6x7 quite a bit.

I hear what you are saying. I want to get a 50mm for Christmas. I'm shooting 80mm on digital so it is like a 120.

On digital normal lens would be 35mm.

you could be the next bill cunningham for the menswear set! i think capturing the essence of the outfit and its defining details are equally as important as the technical aspects of photography. youre doing a really good job, and maybe you ought to consider publishing a book of your pics, a la FRUITS, a window into a new york man's style, but emphasize the dandy-isms and personal eccentricities rather than merely the street sense that so much of new york style is influenced by.
