The Sartorialist Visits Julians In Chapel Hill, NC

I stopped by Julians in Chapel Hill, North Carolina while traveling for Thanksgiving. Great old store with a very long and celebrated history.

I was a little underwhelmed by the selection, maybe I was expecting too much. I guess I was looking for Preppy or Trad to out do Ralph but Ralph's Rugby store opened across the street and has more energy, color and variety. It is frustrating when a relative newcomer like Ralph (Julian's has been open 65 years) can out Prep an original.

Of course the sales staff were true Southern Gentlemen.

ive been through there too, i think its a good place for the local men to be their very southern best (see also ben silver in charleston sc)considering the options they have as alternatives (belk? dillards? yuck!). but overall, the personality of the clothes doesnt really expose the character of the well-bred, educated southern gentleman as well as it could. also kudos to any small local mens shop thats been in business for 60+ years!

Didn't I read someplace that the founder/proprietor of Julians is the father of designer Alexander Julian?

Yes, that is quite right.

Surprisingly I did not see too much A. Julian clothing just some furnishings

When passing thru Fredericksburg Va, stop by Carltons Men's Store on Rt 3 east about 1/2 mile off of I-95. Mr Travis Walker is an educated southern gentleman, out of VMI I believe.
