Chess King....Greenwich Village, New York
The Village Chess Shop is one of those only in New York places. Opened in 1972, its history is written on the faces of its long-time members and on the yellowing newspaper articles that decorate its walls. The Village Chess Shop is one of those places that is a world unto itself. When a regular enters, they are greeted like Norm at Cheers. Pick-up games are played day and night (until midnight!), every day of the week. I mean really, where but New York would you to able to support an all-night chess den, let alone two. The Chess Forum opened six years ago across the street and runs a similar schedule, if only slightly less steeped in history.

post a commentI've played at both places, but definitely prefer The Shop. I would add, that D.C. might support a regular chess shop in the Dupont Circle area, lots of good games to be had there.
I dont think he is the chess king now, like the indian proverb its indians now, and superb piece of art talent you have, keep up the good work.

That place is full of character. Why don't we see places like that in the UK?
I really want to get back into chess, an unusual place to discover style, although I probably shouldn't say that.
In SF we have the same thing, but without walls and newspaper articles. It's in the downtown UN Plaza square where an egalitarian mix of the streetwise, homeless, and top brass financial execs can mingle and catch a game outdoors on a folding table and chairs set up 4 ft from Market St.
