On the Street....Summer Color, New York

I get emails all the time saying "Oh, it's so hot where I live, how can I ever dress fashionably when it is too hot to wear clothes?"

Well, to me this photo is the essence of summer fashion at its hottest. Bright colors, fun accessories and easy hairstyles: summer style can be as easy as a few special pieces.

Hahaha it is funny how OPPOSITE it is in England right now. We're all complaining it is too rainy to wear any summer outfits *sigh*. She looks so chic, and I love how at first glance it looks as if she's barefoot. Really adds to the picture!

Every once I a while you see someone on the street with a look that clearly reflects the season, the spirit of the day and coolness.
I think that this girls is that person. And it is not just because of the dress which by the way is gorgeous. It is also how she has her hair, the a ccessories on her hand the drink that she has.
Really great post.
I love it. Defiantly a favorite.

Oh, I love this dress!! I love the color, the style, the whole thing. The shoes are cute too! The whole look reminds me of summer!

Blogger Alice Olive said ... (11:08 AM) :

It's all about the wearer. Confidence can carry off a potato sack and look amazingly chic and cool (if the weather is hot). A stereotype but it's true.

Cool background as well, 60 Spring St (aka 225 Lafayette), I believe.

Anonymous IS THIS IT? models review said ... (12:45 PM) :

"Bright colors, fun accessories and easy hairstyles" - yep, I totally agree, that's the key... and you don't have to be dishevelled or sloppy to feel fresh, comfortable or "summery casual".

Blogger davidikus said ... (1:00 PM) :

Would the layering not make this rather warm, actually?

It's an exquisite dress for a night out in warm weather, if not for the beach.

Anonymous Marisa Alma said ... (1:07 PM) :

Anonymous FeeFee said ... (1:39 PM) :

It looks good on her, but I wonder if anyone larger or less tan would look good in this? Also, I can't help but think that there's nothing more annoying than heavy jewelry on a hot day.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:42 PM) :

this dress it beautiful in color and cut...almost too lovely for the daytime but the stylishly messy hair and the chic, flat sandals make it work.

as for the people who are unsure of how to dress fashionably or stylishly in hot your imagination. most of great style comes from a willingness to spend the time to find/try out what works best for you. fashion on the otherhand is what designers present and then you pick from the collection what works best for you.

trust your imagination. know your audience. go for it. if you get it wrong, try something different.

Blogger ADJ said ... (1:46 PM) :

Anonymous Kimberley California said ... (2:49 PM) :

Red is my favourite color... so glad to see it back this year. and the nude sandles are spot on. I'm actually wearing a red blouse, nude platforms and a white skirt today.

only thing that's bugging me about this is that the dress looks ill fitting under her arm; like maybe the dress is to big for her and she gathered & pinned it..

That dress looks like the perfect garment for a hot, humid day--it's both flow-y and lovely!

Just looking at that shade of red always makes me feel 5 degress hotter, though. It looks great on her, but I'd go for a cooler tone (pun not entirely intended).

Totally agree with the comment. just keep it simple for the summer and it works out. If you want details, best leave that for the jewelry or hair. This woman looks amazing. It actually makes me happy to look at her.

Blogger meegskerr said ... (7:23 PM) :

Every time I see your photos Scott, I long for warmer weather. This photo has inspired me to pop on my favourite dusty pink silk summer maxi...unfortunately it will be over the top of a black roll neck and vintage ankle boots. Damn cold Melbourne weather.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:02 PM) :

This whole looks so well because of the simple neutrality of the shoes..blend in but on closer inspection have subtle details.

Like the 'tropical fruit punch' color

the cut, shape, and volume are all wrong to me. Looks like a big, red, circus tent.

Is a triangle silhouette ever flattering?

Anonymous Brendan said ... (12:06 AM) :

Anonymous krista said ... (4:42 AM) :

I would like to ask another question: How to wear when it's really cold? I haven't seen any pic's on your blog, when it's -20 or more. It's kind a hard to look good when you need at least three pairs of pants to feel warm enough.

And here in Lapland that kind of weather is really common at the winter. Then is hard to find women with leather stilettos.

Anonymous MargaretBeth said ... (4:52 AM) :

Fabulous photo! You really captured the floatiness of the light material, Scott. Such a huge amount of volume with no heaviness - it looks like she could just drift away. Gorgeous!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:18 PM) :

Great- so now we know how to dress if we are
a. skinny
b. can walk around without a bra, and c. don't need to go to the office.
Indeed, a great achievement.

I now dare you to find a girl that represents the "essence of summer fashion at its hottest" without being any of the above. And then tell us that summer style can be easy.

Blogger hermes said ... (6:27 PM) :

It's very similar to a Lanvin dress from the SS 2008 collection.

Blogger Liz S said ... (7:13 PM) :

I'm probably going to be the only one to say this but I think for very hot days dressing in white, blue or green are the colours that are cooling on the eye... and this transposes to your heart rate to calm you down.

Whilst I adore this dress and it's flowing look, its fiery red colour would only make me want to look away when I'm sweltering in a high rise cityscape.

Same goes for planting in a garden--a cool lot of blue or white flowering plants amongst green grass makes you relax on a hot day. This is why pools and the ocean is also so cooling/relaxing to the psyche in summer.

Blogger M said ... (8:49 PM) :

I love that her cleary slender frame is completely disguised by this vibrant sheath, which would bother many people. Lovely shot.

Blogger Samswardrobe said ... (8:59 PM) :

Love the vibrant colour of the dress. Very summery. So simple yet gorgeous. Anyone know where I can buy this dress?

Anonymous Stern Design said ... (9:11 PM) :

Absolutely fabulous! I could live in a dress like that.

Blogger lollipop4598 said ... (10:00 PM) :

To Annon 4:18 First of all, its not possible to find one picture that encompasses all figure types and all occasions. This woman is certainly pretty, but she is not a supermodel. What she does have is style. And its the IDEA of her outfit that is so universal. NOT the outfit itself. You could go anywhere from a lunch date, to shopping, to a playdate with your kids. Even to many offices, if you threw on a cover. I'd bet a nude or white shirt or crochet shrug would be great. As for work in a conservative office, well that is simple. You wear much the same thing winter and summer. They are airconditioned for a reason. Then, as soon as you can get out of the soul killing environment, put on a summer dress and sandals. SIMPLE.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:02 AM) :

Couldn't help but reply to this message:
"Great- so now we know how to dress if we are
a. skinny

Indeed, a great achievement.

I now dare you to find a girl that represents the "essence of summer fashion at its hottest" without being any of the above. And then tell us that summer style can be easy."

Ok, my response:
The poster stated three things that he considers the "essence of summer fashion at its hottest" and they are "Bright colors, fun accessories and easy hairstyles." I don't see how being skinny, being able to wear a dress without a bra, or needing to go to the office is relevant to the point the poster is making regarding summer fashion.

I find your comment extremely rude and narrow-minded.

Wow, what a lot of reaction to this one! Why do folk relate an image to themselves and not just appreciate the image as a separate entity that does not need, nor should be, emulated. Surely, as individuals, we can admire without feeling any need to replicate. Isn't that the whole point of style? Am I wrong/naive?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:53 AM) :

am i the only one that feels like 2 messy buns make this girl look silly? i dont think its chic or casual-just find it messy/for a 12yr-old. the bracelets also make me sweat in the heat..i think 4 would have been enough rather than 40. even just those pink ones would have looked great! beautiful dress, though we can see where its been pinned. :X

Hey Scott, come to Chicago for next year's Pitch Fork Festival. Hotter than hell, but so many individualistic outfits. Bright colors, hats, sunglasses, I think that you'd like seeing it. Great crowd and music. Hope to see you there next year! -Kristen (Bring Garrance! Je parlerais avec elle en français!) Thanks for your great posts. I love reading and looking at them.

Gorgeous! She looks like a modern Rossetti. Thank you so much for the inspiration - both to the woman and to Scott. Imagine my amazement at discovering an equally stunning dress in the same flame orange at a thrift store today! Received SO many complements as I made my way around town wearing it, and in 40C is was a blessing!
