No one dresses so dignified as this gentleman in these neighborhoods anymore. The style is gone and assumed to be more custom of upper classes. So not true!

Happy Easter to this gentleman, indeed!

Elegant, dignified and stoic; this gentleman has stories to tell for those fortunate enough to make his acquaintance. I'd ask him if he was at Minton's Playhouse when Thelonious Monk was at the piano.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:55 AM) :

@Vanessa @ ProjectZen, I'm so offended by your comment.

You clearly don't spend time in "these" neighborhoods. If you did, you'd know how unusual this style of dress is.

If you do spend time in "these" neighborhoods and still make a comment like this, then you must be walking through quickly with your eyes closed.

Blogger TussahSilk said ... (11:57 AM) :

How sharp is he? I love how unperturbed he is by having his photo taken. I think this style looks particularly age appropriate. Fabulous!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:03 PM) :

you need more pictures from neighborhood people in harlem, refreshing post

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:20 PM) :

Do you know what makes this outfit? The sleeve length. Somehow, if they were shorter and revealed cuffs and links, it would seem contrived or too design-y. This way it seems more natural and accessible. Also, the shined shoes and pressed pant are marks of someone who takes care of what they have. Happy Easter!

What a gorgeous portrait of this man. The pose with that cigarette leaving thoughts fly in the smoke, the eyes looking to oneside -somewhere we don't see- maybe seeking for new hopes, the shoes pointing to the other side... just stunning.
I love it

Blogger The Foolish Aesthete said ... (1:12 PM) :

This gent is the walking (or sitting) personification of "dapper" and "elegant."

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:18 PM) :

to Vanessa @ Project Zen--

You may want to rethink making sweeping assertions and generalizations about "these" neighborhoods (and in general). They make you look ill-informed and thoughtless at best...

Blogger Jg. for FatScribe said ... (2:02 PM) :

Scott -- don't know how you do it, but the composition of this shot is (like so many others of yours) is spot-on.

black on black on black (hat, suit, shoes, bench, fence) and white on white on white (shirt, tie, square).

you should be proud. proud like this fine gentleman.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:53 PM) :

His ease, seasoned critical gaze, elegant style, seen-it-all supreme confidence could just as easily been a shot from front row Pitti U'omo. Joining him, of course, would be Lino, Ricci bros, Laipo and all the other usual suspect cool cat statesmen of style.

exquisite tonal and textural qualities Scott. Glorious get.

Thank you,

this guy is awesome.

i love that it's an outdoor shot with no "contrasting" colors (like green grass or blue sky). black bench, black fence, black suit.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:41 PM) :

Why isn't my grandpa like this? (Except for the cigarette)
My favorite part is his tie :)

Blogger Lara said ... (9:50 PM) :

AHH! This shot is amazinggggggg! I love that his black matches throughout, so it doesn't matter that he has different texture with his suit, socks, bowler, and shoes. I also like that the lighting gives his white tie/shirt/kerchief a pinkish tint. The only thing I don't dig is the glasses/rings. I don't know why, but they seem to detract from the rest for me.

Also he looks weirdly like a thinner version of an English teacher at my school...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:31 AM) :

To Vanessa at Project Zen i say, please look at this 3-photo series of Easter in Harlem. I hope that you realize how narrow minded your comment is. "these neighborhoods", "no one", "upper class"....
Dignity, style and character are not limited to class and or neighborhoods. Maybe take a stroll in one of "these neighborhoods" and open your eyes, but more importantly your mind....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:58 PM) :

he's chillin' and he knows that his look is put together. to him, the only people surprised by this are those who don't know. he also looks to have come of age when people took better poses in photographs.
while a dress shoe vs a loafer could have been nice he looks sharp and he looks like he's having a nice day looking nice.

Blogger Unknown said ... (1:45 PM) :

I love his casualness in pose and ease, mixed with his very sharp suit with white shirt, tie and handkerchief. From his expression it looks like he's seen a few things in his life. Interesting man.

Cool. The epitome of cool. Generally I'm not a big fan of black suits or slip ons w/ a suit and tie combo, but this man has pulled it off perfectly. We all know smoking is unhealthy, yet the cigarette just goes well w/ his distinguished look. The whole look captures an era. Bravo!
