I LOVE LOVE LOVE that she is wearing a helmet. I never see ppl in your bike-riding pics with one.

Here in Oz it is the law to wear one, so all my dream of a gorgeous retro bike with a wicker basket on the front are dashed with a 'do wrecking helmet.

First thing first- I love that you took this shot on University place, in NYC. I do most of my people watching there (a nice spin off from the Union Square crowd), and it's a little strip of so much inspiration. :-)

Especially like the subject above. She knows how to match colors so that she stands out in an interesting way- maybe because she knew that riding bikes in NYC is very dangerous. ;-) I love the fur collar, it's trend without lacking originality.

She's such a lady. I love it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:34 AM) :

Finally a girl wearing a helmet and still looking stylish!

Whenever I see style shots of girls on bikes I think they are super cute but unrealistic. I cycle to work everyday in London and try to dress like I normally would in dresses and heels but not to wear a helmet would be suicide! I am very happy to see this.

Anonymous Marisa said ... (2:53 PM) :

Glorious. Some of the recent photos have been a little too close to ordinary/practical for me. This woman looks really fantastic and in fact she's really well-dressed for a bike ride, in which your torso gets hot and needs air to keep from being sweaty, and your neck and chest get cool (primarily for women who have lower-necked clothes) and needs a scarf or fur stole to stay comfortable. Plus helmet. She makes the helmet look fashionable!

Blogger Kristina said ... (3:20 PM) :

oh my... the colors in this entire picture are phenomenal! the first thing that caught my eye was the contrasting green and yellow leaves at the top.

and then to see the red of the dress.

and then the big surprise of her blue tights and white shoes!

all complemented by the red green and yellow newspaper dispensers.

nicely done! I love color blocking.

Anonymous LIZPR said ... (5:28 PM) :

Cool, striking outfit. North Americans (including myself) are so un-daring with tights - this is great. And thank you for shooting a cyclist with a helmet. I love your romantic shots of women riding their bikes, hair flowing .... but here in Toronto it's risky to go without a helmet - and I'll gladly mess up my hair to be safe .... great shot.

The bike is not a Brompton. It appears to be a coaster-brake version of a Bianchi folding bike---Like this but without the little horn for the caliper brake on the rear wheel:

{This really isn't intended as a comment, but rather is a complaint about the moderation of the comments.}

First of all---I love your blog. I check it almost everyday, unless I'm traveling.

And yeah, I'm a geek, and I especially love folding bikes.

Someone (anonymous) thought that perhaps this bike was a Brompton, which is obviously is not. I spend a full hour trying to identify what bike that is, and I think I got it right with the Bianchi post I posted a few days ago.

A lot of things like Vespa scooters or Piaggios are pretty easy, but this particular bike isn't, and I really think an obscure vintage bike is as much a part of this woman's style as fur and (awesome) tights.

So I'm complaining that my post didn't cut it because I not only did it take me (a folding bike geek) an hour to identify it, it's a cool and stylish item your readers might appreciate.

I love how this young woman is not letting fashion get in the way of her safety ;)It really says something about her that she shirks the chicness of going helmet-less to save her hair & with cigarette in hand in opposition to her peers.

Blogger Bonita said ... (6:37 PM) :

I am very glad to see a chic person with a helmet. I live in a place with a lot of cars, and it's a must to wear helmets! But I love to look nice when I bicycle too. Sometimes, I think I'll be okay, and I can look better without it. (Not a good choice, I know) This photo is a proof for me that I can look as chic being safe too!
