It takes attitude to pull off seersucker shorts and not look ridiculous.

I love the dress in the first pic. I have no idea what fabric that is but it looks light and perfect for summertime dancing.

I also loved the dress in the third pic. So detailed and ladylike but still cool & comfortable enough to wear in modern times. I'd almost swear that's Gwyneth Paltrow.

Anonymous The Photodiarist said ... (9:22 AM) :

Wow! What a fantastic series. The first and last photos are my favorites. You've conveyed such joy in the pictures that it is infectious. Black and white was also a fantastic choice. Awesome work.

I believe the gentleman in the bottom picture is "Dr Dan", one of the most sartorially-minded individuals ever to dance the Lindy Hop (the original form of swing dance from the '30s). I've never seen him *not* dressed well/not dressed vintage.

I love how, though the pictures take me to a time I can only imagine and would love to have lived in, there is a touch of modern in each: a sandal in the first, the filtered cigarette in the second, a plastic bottle in the third, and what looks to be a reusable tote bag in the last.

The photos from this event last year are some of my all-time favorites of yours. I'm so glad to see it's back!

Really wonderful to see how current these styles still are (although a lot of that is a function of the dressers themselves, not the clothes).

Thanks so much!

Blogger Caddy said ... (11:13 AM) :

Lovely pictures! I've had the Jazz Age on my mind lately for a paper at uni and these pictures really will help me envision them more clearly. Thanks for posting these!

Blogger John B Pritchett said ... (11:16 AM) :

Love the rolled up seersucker shorts and hat in the second photo! The drink adds a nice touch but not the cigarette. Makes such a nice ensemble smell badly.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:14 PM) :

Great Shots, Sart!

Makes me wish I was in New York right now, in my seersucker swag with my Panama and spectator brogues on!

I remember that Asian kid in the second photo on the roster for GQ last year (?) for best dressed man in America. How is he doing being a young throwback in a world of sweatpants and baseball caps? It would be nice to see a profile on him. I enjoyed his take on dressing like a gentleman and standing out for his individuality.

BTW, dig the crisp look of the first photo. Speaks volumes in spite of the black and white.

Blogger JP said ... (12:25 PM) :

Hi Scott,

This continues to be one of the most delightful things I've ever seen. Beautiful photography. Sorry to have missed you in Denver during your shoot for GQ! We almost flew back from holiday in Ojai to be 'customers' for the day. I guess you can say we like your work!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:13 PM) :

The movement and joy captured in the first one is especially stunning. Makes me want to hop up and begin dancing. Shooting it in black and white adds to the striking graphic quality of the photo. It's one of the more memorable ones you have taken, and you have taken MANY!

Blogger Spokey said ... (9:24 PM) :

I always love looking at the pictures from this party!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:35 PM) :

Love the movement in the first photo. Gentleman in the last photo looks like Maurice Chevalier [if he'd only worn a bow tie].

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:06 PM) :

Blogger Eugenia Woods said ... (10:30 PM) :

I love the girls sweet white dress and hat. Lovely!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:37 PM) :

Oh, I've been waiting for these! I don't see why we can't dress like this all the time, many of the people in these pix do. You don't have to look selfconsciously retro, you just need an awareness of creating a seasonally- and event-appropriate ensemble and love accessories like hats and cravats. And what better summer fabric than seersucker? Honestly, if our parents/grandparents could take workwear like jeans into the everyday, why can't we return a little polish and care and joy? I also think if we danced every day to live music we would all be happier.

Anonymous Elizabeth W said ... (11:23 PM) :

The gentleman in the 2nd photograph (Ray) is a good friend of mine and has been captured by The Sartorialist's lens many times. There was a comment above about Ray being in GQ's Best dressed men in America. You were absolutely on point! He was dead-center of the photograph in that article. He is always dressed to kill.
EXCELLENT!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:52 PM) :

The photo of the young woman laughing melts me and delights me. Thank you thank you thank you.

Blogger Ros said ... (12:22 AM) :

These are amazing! They just ooze fun!!! …Ooze fun? :/… Well, they do!

Anonymous Mary said ... (12:52 AM) :

I was there! The dancing flapper girl actually had on hightop black Chucks, it was a really fresh look in contrast to all the skin-colored t-strap heels I was seeing.

Clearly I need to step up my game to make it into Sart's viewfinder...maybe next time!

Blogger fshnvctm said ... (12:52 AM) :

The whole "story" is elegant. Seersucker, 2 tone shoes wingtips/cap toes, linen, rayon/silk dresses, straw boaters, cloches ---
I Want! All lovely.

I want to live in these photos, forever and ever.

Blogger Michelle Bobb-Parris said ... (2:07 AM) :

Odd to see a woman wearing Fit Flops in picture 5 though. She's a few decades too early! ;)

Blogger LOOKAROUND said ... (2:18 AM) :

meravigliose !!!

Blogger The DuniaBeast said ... (2:35 AM) :

Can't people dress like this all the time? I always look at old photo albums and wonder,"why did everyone look so good back then? why don't people look like that now?" I found the reason: people need their class back. Dress nicely and your features will follow suit.

Are you kidding me? The shot of the couple dancing actually gave me the same thrilling feeling you get in your stomach when flying down a hill on a bike with no hands. I want a print of this. It looks almost like the type of shot that would take hours and teams of experts to stage, but then there are these lovely imperfection--his off-kilter bow tie, the sweat coming through his shirt, the scrape on her knee. But look at his feet!! You caught him at a weightless moment. Is he on his way up or down? Who cares. It's brilliant!!

Again I echo what I posted in the above photos--all of them are gorgeous.
The movement in the first photo is infectious--ohh, those legs!
Smoking is so wrong so I hate to admit the 2nd photo is superb with that cigarette.
The hat and dress on that lady sit so perfectly on her and she is dancing with that laugh. I love the suit and tie in the last photo--double breasted is underrated these days--and this one fits so flatteringly.
Thanks Sart--your photos allowed me a little bit of real fantasy this morning.

This jazz section optimizes New York for me. I don't really notice the clothes but notice the peoples smiles and body language. New yorkers are the most vibrant lovely creatures I have ever met.

Beautiful mix of people.

Fact: Seersucker shorts are awesome.

Though I don't know if I like the monocolored outfit of the man in the first photo. (Maybe it's not all white, just in B&W)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:19 PM) :

Love the outfit. Reminds me of The Great Gatsby!

To find more of this kind of thing, come out to the Dunsmuir Estate in Oakland, CA on Sunday Septemeber 12, 2010 to the Art Deco Society of Northern California's Gatsby Summer Afternoon. Step back in time to the 1920s and 1930s to mingle and picnic with over five hundred folks all in vintage or vintage-inspired garb, with their vintage picnics, admiring the many antique automobiles, whilst listening and dancing to the tunes of the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra. An annual tradition for over 25 years.
