This image is of my great grandfather Willem Kat and his daughter Harriet in Yosemite in 1931. Willem Kat was one of the early founders of modern day rock climbing and lived in Yosemite National Park for 19 years as a contractor. Kat Pinnacle named for him in Yosemite.

I love the simple urban explorer feel of this look, the slate green shirt with the classic but slightly fuller cut khakis is perfection in its stealth.

However, I think the photograph - and the look itself - is made measurably more refined by its juxtaposition with the rugged grooming.

It is such an art to be well-groomed but not manscaped. This is one of the best examples I've seen in a while.

July 4th Weekend in Capri

Over July 4th weekend, Tod's invited Garance and myself to Capri for the opening of their Jackie Onassis photo exhibit.

As you can imagine, the images are beautiful, inspiring, and poetic; see Garance's post, here.

Mr. Della Valle and crew were incredible hosts and allowed us to see a side of Capri that a first-time visitor rarely experiences. For a location as famous as Capri to live up to decades of hype seemed impossible, and yet it was even more enchanting than I had expected.

This rugged landscape has been tamed by the luxurious Italian lifestyle: food, architecture, the highest standard of living. Capri will be high on my list of favorite locations, going forward.

A big big thanks to Diego, Andrea, Sarika, and Mariacristina.

The bougainvillea flowed down the architecture and mountainside like a beautiful floral fog.

Walking around Capri, you really have to keep your eyes open. Every corner you turn there is a new tableau.

Aerial view (well, actually - from just really high up the mountainside!) of the world-famous La Fontelina lido.

This shot is really for Garance. A native Corsican, she has taught me to appreciate the diversity of flora and fauna a Mediterranean island can offer. The smells are just incredible.

Scenes from the "Deva," easily one of the most beautiful sailboats on the Mediterranean.

Jose Miguel Antunez, joining us on the crew. He is a legendary basketball player.

I don't really know anything about boats, but every detail I saw on the "Deva" was beautiful - here, the leather-covered rings on the main mast.

It is so real and well-executed, and respectful of the models; it's not just a publicity stunt to boost sales. What do you think? (You can also see it online here.)

As you know, I am a huge fan of Franca Sozzani's work. I learned photography flipping through pages of Vogue Italia all through the 90s. Her web presence is of note as well - over a year ago she introduced IT Vogue Curvy and IT Vogue Black on her magazine's site.

I think this cover story is just another example of why Franca is so ahead of the game in fashion magazine publishing, and why she is the most visionary editor working today.

I shot Ermenegildo Zegna the other day at Louis Vuitton wearing a beautiful brown suit with a blue striped shirt.

After my return from fashion week, I was looking through my archives and came across these shots of guys in the same color combination, looking equally smashing.

It's not the first color palette that comes to mind when putting together a summer look, but clearly there is something here!

Actually, I saw Michelle too for just a brief moment - but absolutely did not recognize her. The last time I saw her was when I took the below photograph. Wow - talk about a chameleon!

I guess that's one of the traits of highly creative people: an ambition to constantly evolve.

Kiehl's Father's Day Shoot

I think stay-at-home dads get a bad rap in the media.

We're often portrayed as forgetful, distracted, emotionally stunted parental blobs who never get it right.

And yet somehow - I loved my time as a stay-at-home dad, it literally changed my life, and I met a lot of other dads during that time that proved to me that the media portrayal is just not justified.

Sara Denny-Roth of Kiehl's and I always agreed that this special dopp kit project was a celebration of dads and their interaction with their children. In my experience, some of the smallest but most special moments that dads have with their kids is while playing at the park; so, we gathered several dads we knew and invited them to a playdate. We used the same park in the West Village that I always take my kids to - and actually, this is the place that I really learned photography whileas I shot my kids just being kids. Our only stipulation was to forget about me shooting and just focus on having fun.

Below are some of the shots from that day. I hope in these images you see the tenderness, warmth and genuine love that I felt between these families that day.
Becoming a father and the daily gift/challenge of that role is nourishment to my life. I want to thank Kiehl's for helping me promote and celebrate that joy with an even larger audience.

Making of The Sartorialist for Kiehl's Dopp Kit

Kiehl's and I had been wanting to work together for a while, but could not figure out the right format; then, they commissioned me to create a dopp kit for their upcoming Father's Day promotions and it fell right into place.

I loved the challenge of designing a product from scratch and they were keen to let me have it produced in Italy by my good friend, Luca Roda. The deal was cemented when Kiehl's agreed to promote the project with a shoot celebrating the special relationship a Dad has with his kids (you'll see some of those images in a post tomorrow).

During the project I took a few photos at critical moments in the design process. The photo above is literally the moment I got the inspiration for how I wanted the dopp kit to look. (It pays to always have a camera with you!)

Garance and I were sitting at our favorite crêpe place in Paris, and while we were talking I kept thinking how much I liked the colors of her two knits. (I'm such a sucker for grey and navy.) I loved the idea of a dark, masculine navy exterior for the kit; navy has always been my power color. But by making the interior a light shade of grey it would be so much easier to actually find things inside the kit.

While we were in Milan, Garance and I sat in bed and laid out the interior of the kit. I knew I wanted a lot of pockets to securely hold not only Kiehl's products but also the other items I always throw in my kit, like my toothbrush, cufflinks, tweezers, asprin, etc.

One of the first things I sketched was a zipper going across the top of the dopp kit. "Why across the top?" she asked. "That's where zippers on dopp kits go.....duh!" I responded (like a third grader). Garance patiently explained that by placing the zipper around the lid of the kit it would allow us to use the top interior of the kit for additional storage. I know she's right but I hate when her stupid good sense makes better sense than my smart bad sense....does that make sense?

The proto phase was trick trying to triangulate between Kiehl's in New York, Luca Roda in Italy and me - usually on the road.

Above is one of the first protos. Besides the obvious design changes like moving the strap and the logo the biggest design challenge was placement of the zipper. In the first proto the interior seam around the lid seemed too bulky; the fashion fabric, the interior fabric and the zipper tape were all combined in the binding around the lid and the result was less than elegant. It seems like an easy problem to solve but when you are constantly on the road and outside shooting, it is difficult to take time to sit quietly and think out a design challenge.

Then, the answer came to me while I was jogging. If I moved the zipper down a half inch or so it would remove the zipper tape from the binding...voila!! Problem solved! I love a good design challenge but like most things you can't rush the answer. It comes when it comes and that could be when you're cooking or running or staring out the window of a plane.

Overall, I loved the process of creating this kit and working with Sara from Kiehls and Luca Roda. It seemed like a year-long process of challenge and reward that, in the end, was almost as much fun as having the finished product.

The sister of my grandfather took this picture in a field of French country.

My maternal grandfather was an incredible gentlemen and always looked very dapper, no matter what he wore. Being a South African mango and cattle farmer that usually meant a light plaid shirt, khaki shorts, knee high socks, leather shoes and always, always a hat. His hair was always perfectly pomaded underneath the hat and I cannot recall ever seeing his hair in a mess. Despite the fact that he was out in the fields all day long he always looked neat.

I selected this picture of him in a military factory during WW2, somewhere in Northeast Africa, mainly because of his hair. Neat and stylish without a curl out of place. And even though he is wearing a plain military shirt and pants, he still looks perfectly styled.
